The Vikings

So for 300 years these people lived in comparitive peace, until from 800 AD onwards the Vikings (Norwegians and Danish) started their raids. The Humber was an ideal means to get into the hinterland, and settlements like Laceby would have attracted their attention. The raids went on until 870 AD when the Vikings decided to . settle in this part of England, and became so firmly established that by 886 AD Laceby would have been in the "Danelaw", an area covering half of England that the Vikings had taken over from the Anglo Saxons.

The Vikings called the people of our area the Suthan Hymbre - (South Humbrians).
